History
Chuncheon city, an ancient capital of Maek was called as Usuju under the monarchy of Queen Sondok 6th year(637), the 27th queen of Shinla. Usuju was renamed as Suyakju(Ogeunnae or Suchayak) in the King Kyoungdok 16th year(757) and renamed later as Gwanghaeju.
In the King Taejo 23th year(940) of Koryo, it was renamed as Chunju and Chuncheon was under the authority of Anbyun Doho-bu with Danryunsa in the King of Sungjong 14th year(995). Due to difficult traffic with perilous roads, Chuncheon was promoted in status to Anyang Doho-bu by Cho Chung-heon in the King of Shinjong 6th year(1203) and separated from Anbyun Doho-bu however, it was degraded to Jichunjusa in the same year.
King Taejong 13th year(1413) renamed it as Chuncheon, the present name, which became one of counties in administrative division, and was promoted to Doho-bu in the King Taejong 15th(1415). King Injo 5th year(1627) removed Doho-bu and placed Bangeo-sa and Poto-sa, then Youngjo 23th year(1747) placed deputy delegate and Jwayeong as Bangeo-sa was moved to Cheolwon. Afterwards, it was degraded to Hyeon in the King of Youngjo 13th year(1755) and became Doho-bu in King Youngjo 40th(1764) again.
As it was promoted to Yusubu in King Kojong 25th year(1888) to be under the control of Gyeonggi and then Chuncheon Yusu(one of government posts in Chosun) Min Do-ho constructed detached palace at the place of Gangwon provincial government by royar order and designated it as a refuge in case of emergency condition in the royal court. King Kojong 32nd(1895) reorganized Gangwon-do with Chuncheon-bu(13 guns) and Gangreung-bu(9 guns) by abolishing the previous 8 Do(s) and establishing 23 Bu(s). On Aug. 4 of 1896, the next year, as 23-bu system was reformed into 14-do system under the royal edict No. 36(Promulated on Aug. 4, 1896), provincial authority was reorganized into the provincial office and it became Chuncheon-gun to govern 1 eup, 10 myeons and 108 ris.
It was renamed as Cheon-gun Bunae-myeon in 1913 and reorganized into Chuncheon-myeon, as one of 24 designated myeons including Suwon, Songdo etc. The Chuncheon myeon was promoted to eup from the reorganization of local institution under the ordinance No. 103(Promulated on Dec. 29, 1930) on Apr. 1 of 1931.
In 1938, town street plan including the whole district of eup and a part of Chiljun-ri , Sinnam-myeon was performed, and 6 ris including Suksa, Twegye, Onui of Sindong-myeon, Udu, Sanong of Sinbuk-myeong and Hupyung-dong of Dong-myeon etc. were incorporated into Chuncheo-eup under ordinance No. 169(Promulgated on Sep. 30, 1939) on Oct. 1st of 1939 with a change in 6 ris including Udu, Sanong-ri of Sinbuk-myeon, Hupyung-ri of Dong-myeon, Suksa, Twekye of Sindong-myeon and Onui-ri etc. to increase administrative distric.
On June 1, 1946, Chuncheon-eup was promoted to Chuncheon-bu and Chuncheon-gun was renamed as Chunseong-gun by the 84th Military government law(Promulated on May 13, 1946). On Aug. 15, 1949, it was renamed as Chuncheon city, as local government law became effective under Law No. 32(Promulated on April 7, 1949).
Hoja 1-dong was divided as Hoja 3-dong was newly established under City's Ordinance No. 365 (Promulated on July 1, 1970) on July 1, 1970, and on July 1, 1973, Samcheon and Chiljeon-ri of Sindong-myeon, Geumsan(Jungdo) and a part of Hyunam-ri of Seo-myeon, and Sindong-ri of Sinbuk-myeon in Chunseong-gun were incorporated into Chuncheon city, according to the reorganization of administrative district under Executive Order No. 6542(1973. 3. 12). Besides, Bukbang, Pungcheon-ri of Dongsan-myeon were incorporated into Hongchun-gun and Susan-ri of Buksan-myeon were incorporated into Inje-gun.
On Jan. 1, 1986, Hupyeong-dong were divided into Hupyeong 1,2 dongs under City's Ordinance No. 1337, and on April 1, 1989, Sindong-myeon Sinchon-ri agency was promoted to Dongnae-myeon under the Gun's Ordinance No. 1200(Promulated on March 29, 1989). On the same day, as Nam-myeon Balsan agency was promoted to Nam-myeon under Gun's Ordinance No. 1202, the former Nam-myeon was renamed as Namsan-myeon.
On Feb. 1, 1992, it was renamed as Chuncheon-gun under Law No. 4417(Promulated on Dec. 14, 1991) and on Aug. 27, 1994, the division results into Hupyeong 2,3 dongs under City's Ordinance No. 1861.

Chuncheon city and Chuncheon-gun were united and became Chuncheon city in the form of urban and rural complex, under Law No. 4774 on the establishment of 33 cities including Namyangju city in Gyeonggi-do in the form of urban and rural complex(Promulated on Aug. 3, 1994).

On March 1, 1998, Dong-myeon Sanggeol agency was removed under City's Ordinance No. 295(1998, 2, 26), and on Oct. 12, 1998, dong offices in which the number of residents was less than 5 thousand were abolished and united under City's Ordinance No. 310(1998. 10. 12); Jungang-dong, Sonak-dong and Soyang-dong were united into Soyang-dong, as Geunhwa-dong, Hoban-dong into Geunhwa-dong, Yaksa-dong, Jukrim-dong into Yaksamyeong-dong, Onui-dong, Samsheon-dong and Chilsong-dong into Gangnam-dong, Sau-dong, Udu-dong, Sanong-dong and Sin-dong into Sinsau-dong, and Seo-myeon Deokduwon agency, Sabuk-myeon Yongsan agency and Buksan-myeon Jogyo agency were abolished under the same Ordinance.
