As
a mountain of the curious rock
cliff, which is rising aloft
soaking its feet in Lake Uiam
and Bukhan river, this mountain
with the height of 654 m has
a main peak called Yonghwabong.
This mountain is located 80
km far away to the north from
Seoul city, and 10 km far away
to the southwest from Chuncheon
city.
This mountain is located right
to the west of Uiam dam of Gyeongchun
national highway, and to the
south, getting along the riverside
flowing into Bukhan river, Mt.
Geombongsan and Mt. Bonghwasan
are located. Main peaks are
three such as Cheongunbong(546
m), Deungseonbong (632m), along
with Yonghwabong, so this mountain
is called Mt. Samaksan, and
a ridge stretching down from
the three peaks consists of
rocks. Main crags consisting
of the mountain are sorts of
quartzite, which are the metamorphic
crags produced when the sandstone,
which was accumulated around
from 570 million years ago to
2,500 million years ago, was
under a high temperature and
high pressure.
From the summit, Lake Uiam and
Bukhan river are seen. As a
fortress of the heaven¡¯s
blessing, which used the precipitous
geographical features of the
mountain, here and there in
the ridge, there remain about
470 m of traces, which are reported
that they were the castle sites
of Maekguk or the palace sites
built by King Gungye of Later
Three Kingdoms.
As cultural properties in addition
to them, there are Geumseonsa
temple, Sinheungsa
temple, Heungguksa temple, and
Sangwonsa temple around the
mountain. The size of the mountain
is not great or magnificent,
but since this mountain has
graceful landscapes and consists
of curious rocks, many climbers
visit here. Among noted places,
Deungseon waterfall(or Gyeongju
waterfall) has the 2nd and 3rd
waterfall in addition to the
1st waterfall with the height
of 15 m, and additionally, large
and small waterfalls such as
Deungseon, Biseon, Seunghak,
Bakryeon, Juryeom waterfall
are followed. |
