The animation museum was opened with the basement and two stories on the ground, and with the floor area of 882 pyeong, at the business cost of 14.3 billion won, in the building site of 36,000 pyeong around the lake at Hyeonam-ri, Seo-myeon, Chuncheon, on July 30, 2003, based on the beautiful surrounding given condition of Chuncheon and the Anitown festival that has been progressed for seven years.
This museum is an only animation museum in Korea, which is managed by Chuncheon city and Chuncheon culture industry promotion foundation so that the right recognition about animation and its preciousness can be arisen and the museum should be made a living education field of the citizen¡¯s spirit culture, by materials regarding animation being excavated, collected, kept, exhibited, and researched. In addition, this museum was constructed so that the foundation of future industries should be prepared based on the new recognition on animation, which settles as a creative art work and as a media for representing a life, and illuminate the stature and history of Korean animation.

In the exhibition hall on the fist floor, the origin and birth of animation, kinds of animations, production techniques, production processes, history of machine development related to animation, Korean animation history can be appreciated. As for the exhibition hall on the 2nd floor, since the North Korea hall, Chuncheon hall, American hall, Japanese hall, European hall, and hall of other areas including Asia exhibit the world animation history and have experience facilities, not only the youth but also animation mania can have new visions.
Holding around 10,000 collections related to animation, and the experience facilities, the animation museum makes cultural and aesthetic functions and entertainment functions of animation widely known, and performs a leading role in culturing animation, by which it expands the base of the culture industry to provide a vision of the culture industry. Also, as a center of the culture belt connected to the puppet theater, which is the only one in Korea, the forest museum park, and the Kimyoojeong house of literature, this museum will incorporate various forms of culture events with the local culture.
