If
you go about 8 km to the southwest from Chuncheon
city, Mt. Samaksan with the height of 654 m appears
right next to Uiam Dam, and in this Mt. Samaksan,
Heungguksa temple is located.
Huengguksa temple is a place where Gungye of Post-Goguryeo
in the later three kingdoms¡¯ period fought with
Wanggeon in 894, and it is handed down that the
reconstruction of the nation was desired by baking
tiles in a place called ¡°Oe(Wa)degi¡±, constructing
a palace with them, and building a temple called
Heungguksa.
The place where the palace was located in the
center of the mountain fortress at that time is
called the ¡°palace lot¡± even today, and the
place where the tiles were baked is called ¡°Oe(Wa)degi¡±,
the place where horses were tied up is called
¡°Malgol(Horse gol)¡±, the place where the fight
with daggers occurred is called ¡°Kalbong(Dagger
peak)¡±, and the place where soldiers aired their
clothes is called ¡°Otbawi(Clothes rock)¡±. The
temple is called Heungguksa as it was called in
the old time, and a popular name is the great
temple. Afterwards, this temple, which was burnt
with fires due to disturbances of war several
times, was remodeled again in the 2nd year of
Gwangmu, but since it was ruined and narrow, 17
pyeong of Daeungjeon(a hall of the great hero)
was reconstructed in 1986. |
