The Soyang festival is the oldest traditional
folk festival event in Chuncheon, which started
from the¡¸forthysia culture festival¡¹in
1966, and since 1983, it has been changed into
the current ¡¸Soyang festival¡¹to
be the 25th festival this year.
As a folk festival that excavates, succeeds, and
conserves the traditional folk culture of the
native province, and strengthens the harmony of
citizens, this festival is a comprehensive art
festival with the harmonized traditional folk
event and modern art. The Soyang culture festival
is developing into the ¡®great festival
of Chuncheon citizens¡¯ since the folk,
physical training, literary art, and event for
showing an example are variously progressed.
In the festival, with the eve first, the literary
art event, Soyang marketplace, and folk athlete
meetings such as the Mt. Bonguisan religious service,
Gil play, performance for congratulation, trial
performance of fight with the cart of an only
wheel, trial performance of the nation-wide traditional
exorcisms, Hwiho contest, tug of war, having a
swing, wrestling, and game of throwing an arrow,
etc. are held.
In addition to them, the citizen¡¯s song
contest, and the festival of youthfulness for
the youth are also progressed to play a good role
of strengthening the harmony of local residents.
This festival is highly evaluated in terms of
the people¡¯s culture succession , as a
part of the effort to conserve and develop the
tradition at this period when the Korean¡¯s
disappears increasingly.
