The Ministry of Culture and Tourism selected Chu
ncheon as the ¡®city of culture¡¯, based
on achievements of the Chuncheon puppet play festival.
Accordingly, Chuncheon city progressed the establishment
of the Chuncheon puppet theatre in order to construct
a puppet theatre, which meets its fame that Chuncheon
is a city hosting the international puppet play
festival, so that it can expand the bases of the
puppet play and seek for continuous development
of the Chuncheon puppet play festival, and through
this, in order to raise the stature of Chuncheon,
¡® a city of culture¡¯. This was supported
as a part of the policy of the Ministry of Culture
and Tourism for activating local culture, and
the puppet theatre was opened in Sanong-dong,
Chuncheon city, in May 4, 2001.
As a children¡¯s theatre based on the Korean
only puppet play, the Chuncheon puppet theatre
leads the Korean puppet play circle through high
level of performance programs, and also functions
as an active culture supplier for children.
In addition, the Chuncheon puppet theatre strengthens
various education programs and the cultural and
creative capacity of Chuncheon city, which is
a base of knowledge industry, through a role of
central base of the representative performance
art festival.
